Examples of Student Works from Yoonmi Nam's class PRNT 300/500 Japanese Water-based Woodblock Printmaking at the University of Kansas
This course is a Special Topics in Printmaking Class offered every spring semester at the University of Kansas. It is open to all levels of students in the University. In this class, students complete 5 projects during the semester. Each project is designed to introduce students to new techniques and concepts that relate to the art of Japanese style water-based woodblock printing (Mokuhanga). Studying Japanese prints in the Spencer Museum of Art collection is an integral part of the class. Students are also encouraged to experiment with both traditional and contemporary Japanese printmaking processes.
FIRST PROJECT
Learning the basics - Students learn the basic Mokuhanga carving and printing technique by completing a simple black and white print.

SECOND PROJECT
Studying Ukiyo-e prints in the Spencer Museum of Art Print Collection - Students select a Ukiyo-e print in the Spencer print collection to closely study and recreate the print fully or partially. They are also asked to study the subject matter, content, theme, technique and /or style of their chosen print.
THIRD PROJECT
Applying traditional methods and ideas to contemporary settings - With more technical proficiency in the mid-semester, students complete an edition of a full color print with their own subject/idea/concept/narrative/composition.
FOURTH PROJECT
Experimental Prints - Some experimental and/or non-traditional methods are introduced for the students.
FIFTH PROJECT
4"x6" Post Card Exchange Print - With the edition size of 20, students learn to make a large consistent edition.
